Facts about the municipality

Population: 6,120

Area: 1,914 km2

Municipality: Tinn

Administrative centre: Rjukan

The town of Rjukan is an active small-town community with cinema, shops, specialist stores, cafés and restaurants. The town of Rjukan lies in Vestfjorddalen and is the administrative centre of Tinn Municipality. Rjukan has a hospital, swimming centre and a comprehensive range of services. It is known for its magnificent, dramatic scenery and the steep, claustrophobic mountain sides enclosing it. In winter the sun never reaches the town and local enthusiasts have investigated the possibility of building a solar mirror to reflect sunlight down onto the Square.

Tinn Municipality has several lively townships: Miland, Tinn Austbygd, Atrå, Tessungdalen and Hovin. Several of these townships have preserved the rich local cultural traditions of music, rose painting, embroidery, knife-making and wood-carving. Various mountain dairies and farms offer samples of local traditional food and also make food for sale.

Tinn is a central access point for Hardangervidda which is Europe’s largest mountain plateau and the site of Norway’s largest National Park. The park has a varied natural life and is for the most part easy to get around in.
