A fairytale summer in Rjukan

In the summer, Rjukan and Tinn are at their most idyllic – the valleys become green and lush, and the rivers and waterfalls sparkle beautifully in the mountains. Here you’ll find experiences and activities for groups of friends, for families, for couples and for those traveling solo.

Gaustatoppen is one of our most visited attractions, and is especially recommended on days when the sky is clear – then you can see a full 1/6 of Norway. With the cable car Gaustabanen you get access to the spectacular view in just 15 minutes.

Rjukan, together with Notodden, is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the Norwegian Industrial Workers Museum you can learn more about the industry in Rjukan, and the important sabotage operations during World War II. After a visit to the museum, a city walk through historic Rjukan is a perfect way to visit the city’s exciting shops and restaurants.

Around Rjukan we have several beautiful villages, where you can get a taste of norwegian traditions. At Håvardsrud seter you can meet the animals, and eat delicious rømmegrøt (sour cream porrigde). Lure cultural heritage area and Sandven are perfect for families with young children.

Adventure awaits!

Vacation on two wheels

The area is fantastic for those who enjoy cycling, and there are great routes for all levels of experience.

On the Hardangervidda plateau you will find many cycling tours through beautiful high mountain scenery. For example, you can cycle from Kalhovd to Gvepseborg.

The Tessungdalen–Rjukan route is well suited for more experienced cyclists who are comfortable cycling along the road. Through Tessungdalen you cycle through a beautiful valley landscape with the river Tessungåe rushing by your side, before continuing through the villages of Austbygde and Atrå along Tinnsjøen to Mæl, and into Rjukan you encounter a magnificent view of Gaustatoppen. This cycle tour offers many cozy stops along the way with swimming spots, cafes, shops and hikes.

The World Heritage town of Rjukan stretches through Vestfjorddalen, and can easily be explored by bike – from beautiful Krosso and Villaveien in the west to cozy Tveito and Tinn Museum in the east. The area is flat, suitable for most people, and on the way you can stop by the cozy shops and restaurants in the center.

At Gausta there are good conditions for both short and longer trips on gravel and paved roads, and here you can also rent several types of bicycles for different needs. On two wheels you get a completely new experience of the beautiful high mountain landscape, and the area is suitable for families.
