Winter

A wonderful winter adventure
The landscape in Rjukan and Tinn becomes dramatic and beautiful in winter—thick layers of snow cover the mountains, and the many waterfalls in the valleys freeze into ice.
In October, the sun hides behind the mountain, and Rjukan remains in shadow until mid-March. The Sun Mirror, mounted at the top of one of the valley sides, ensures that sunlight reaches the town’s residents.
Gaustatoppen is one of our most visited attractions, and in winter, the Gaustabanen funicular takes you safely to the summit. Gausta is one of Norway’s most snow-reliable ski destinations, offering activities for all ages, fantastic dining experiences, and various events.
Rjukan, together with Notodden, is inscribed on the UNESCOs World Heritage List. At the Norwegian Industrial Workers’ museum, you can learn more about Rjukan’s industry and the crucial sabotage missions carried out during World War II. After visiting the museum, a walk through historic and charming Rjukan is the perfect way to spend your time—soaking up the rays from the Sun Mirror and exploring the town’s exciting shops and restaurants.
Gausta – the ski destination at the foot of Norway’s most beautiful mountain
Just 2.5 hours from Oslo lies one of the Norway’s most snow-reliable winter destination, featuring 44 slopes, 13 lifts, and 35 km of trails.
At Gausta, you can stay exactly as you wish—here you’ll find the modern mountain hotel Gaustablikk Fjellresort, Gausta Sportell with the ski slope and lift right on the doorstep, and a wide selection of cabins and apartments.
