Experience the Heavy Water Cellar – one of Norway’s most powerful interactive exhibitions
In the Heavy Water Cellar, the original site of one of the world’s most legendary military operations, you can explore a gripping and interactive exhibition about the high-risk sabotage mission in which the heavy water cells at Vemork were destroyed, delaying the German atomic research program.
The exhibition won bronze in the category “Digital Infographic” at the European Design Awards 2024.
The Heavy Water Cellar was also one of five finalists for the prestigious “Building of the Year” award in Norway in 2023.
What really happened during those dramatic events?
Why did the saboteurs make the choices they did? And who were they as people?
In the Heavy Water Cellar, you are invited to face the same dilemmas the saboteurs encountered during the operation – in the very rooms where they stood on the night of 28 February 1943.
Using AR technology, you can follow the saboteurs’ journey to Vemork, the attack on the facility, and their escape after completing the mission. Solve tasks and explore with UV flashlights. Watch an animation showing how heavy water was produced. Step into the room where the heavy water cells were destroyed. The historical events are brought to life through spectacular films and animations projected onto the walls.
The exhibition is suitable for all ages, across generations.
Admission to the Heavy Water Cellar is included in your ticket to Vemork.
